The Tennessee Birth Coalition (TBC) is a non-profit, grassroots organization promoting access to the Midwives Model of Care. Certified Professional Midwives (CPMs) are highly trained and experienced in assisting pregnant and birthing women.
TBC was conceived on April 9th, 2010 after learning that the CPM Council were given copies of Proposed Draft Regulations that strictly defined “standard of care" rules. While the Proposed Draft Regulations have since been dismissed, new draft regulations are being reviewed by the Board of Osteopathic Examiners and their OB/GYN colleagues. We should expect that OB/GYNs will seek more physician involvement with CPM care, which could very well affect midwifery and home births in Tennessee.
With an eye to our present situation and to our future, we have formed a consumer and birth advocacy group. If you support parents' rights to make educated decisions about their care provider and location of birth, even if you personally wouldn't choose or haven't chosen home birth, please support the Tennessee Birth Coalition.
Our Goals are to:
- Preserve a woman’s right to make educated choices about her birth care provider and birth environment.
- Preserve the legal protection afforded to licensed CPMs in Tennessee.
- Advocate the preservation of midwife-attended births, in accordance to the Midwives Model of Care, in any setting.
- Advocate for legislation which increases, improves and supports access to midwifery care.
